For more than 5 years, the Liberal Democrats have been campaigning for a better deal for serving and retired Gurkha soldiers.
Thanks to pressure from the Lib Dems, the battle to secure a fair deal for the Gurkhas has received a huge boost. Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg's motion to allow retired Gurkhas to settle in the UK was backed by MPs despite strong opposition by Gordon Brown and the Labour Government. This historic vote in the House of Commons was the first time a Government had lost an opposition day motion for over thirty years. It was also Gordon Brown's first Parliamentary defeat.
Although this was a huge victory for the Lib Dems, the battle isn't over. Lib Dem campaigners are keeping up the pressure on Gordon Brown to do the right thing for the Gurkhas and abide by the vote that gives retired Gurkhas the citizenship rights they clearly deserve. Despite clear support in the Parliament, the Government is still dragging its feet and refusing to end this injustice. Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg said, "Parliament has voted to do the decent thing. The people want us to do the decent thing and, above all, the Gurkhas deserve decent treatment."
