South Scotland region

South Scotland is a huge area and in fact it takes about five hours to drive from Eyemouth in the east to Stranraer in the west. It's probably about the size of Belgium, is the second largest of all the Scottish regions and is made up of nine constituencies which are Kilmarnock and Irvine Valley, Ayr, Ettrick, Roxburgh & Berwickshire, Midlothian South, Tweeddale & Lauderdale, Carrick, Cumnock & Doon Valley, Clydesdale, Dumfriesshire, East Lothian and Galloway & West Dumfries.

The region is covered by eight local authorities and these include East Ayrshire (part), North Ayrshire Council (part), South Ayrshire Council, Scottish Borders Council, East Lothian Council (part), Dumfries and Galloway Council, South Lanarkshire (part), Midlothian (part).

South Scotland can be characterised by its impressive uplands, rolling farmland and rugged sea coasts. It's a land of ancient buildings and boasts strong literary connections, with Burns, Hogg and Sir Walter Scott having all lived there.

The region is truly Scotland's jewel in the crown. The scenery changes with the peaks of the Big Cheviot and the Eildon hills, landmarks seen by generations of travellers at the Carter Bar on the A68 (or Dere Street as it was called), the ancient Roman road that passes through the Old Roman Town site of "Trimontium", near Melrose. And then there are the forests and moors of upland Galloway and the greens of Ayrshire's pastures, with the steep mountainous profile of the island of Arran as a backdrop. Then of course there's East Lothian, famous for its forty miles of coastline and world famous golfing facilities. It really is a fantastic place to visit and especially more so because it's so close to the main transport links.
