Commenting as figures reveal that house prices in some areas of rural Scotland have doubled, Scottish Liberal Democrat Housing spokesperson Jim Hume MSP said:
"It is getting more and more difficult for first time buyers to get on the rural housing ladder. Rural areas need affordable housing like all other parts of the country, but these new figures could mean that people are being priced out of their local area.
"The Scottish Government needs to look at implementing the innovative 'Home On The Farm scheme' so that more affordable homes could be created from disused and underused farm buildings. This would not only give farmers a new income, but would also provide affordable homes for individual and families in these areas. The Scottish Government should also consider working with the Community Land Trust which can help provide local affordable housing in rural areas.
"The SNP Government needs to take these innovative steps to ensure a vibrant and accessible rural communities."
