Jim Hume, Liberal Democrat MSP for the South of Scotland, last Friday (23rd July) heard from members of Dovesdale Action Group about the proposed waste incinerator at Stonehouse and took the opportunity to visit the site.
The MSP has concerns about the location of the proposed development and has written to South Lanarkshire Council about what he considers to be a breach of the local planning policies. Mr Hume has also lodged several Freedom of Information requests about what discussions took place between the Council and Scotgen in the months preceding the application's submission.
Mr Hume said:
"The area of the proposed plant is deemed countryside in the local plan and it seems very much at odds with local planning policy to carry out such a development in that kind of area. Indeed, it seems strange that a proposal of this kind has even got to the formal application stage.
"People are very concerned about this proposal, but let's be clear, this is about protecting the environment, our health and it's about finding better solutions to deal with our waste.
"With local authorities under pressure to meet landfill target by 2013, we should be finding ways to radically reduce our waste in the first place."
