Jim Hume, Liberal Democrat MSP for the South of Scotland, has today reacted to news that the application for a new pharmacy in Newcastleton has now been withdrawn by the applicant.
Mr Hume, in an earlier joint meeting with his Parliamentary colleague, Michael Moore MP, met with NHS Borders' Chief Executive and Chairman to discuss the impact such an application might have on the existing GP dispensing surgery and the MSP subsequently formally objected in a letter to the health board's chief, Calum Campbell.
Mr Hume said:
"It goes without saying that any kind of application should be judged on its individual merits and in this case, a new pharmacy which would have been in direct competition with the GP dispensing surgery was not the right option or a sensible one for Newcastleton.
"I think that the decision to withdraw the application is the right one for the good of the community."
