Jim Hume, Liberal Democrat MSP for the South of Scotland and Liberal Democrat Rural Affairs spokesman, has revealed confusion over jobs at the Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS).
The FCS has instigated a jobs freeze, following UK Government policy, despite the fact that it is a devolved forestry body and completely accountable to the Scottish Government.
Commenting, Jim Hume said:
"Last week the Environment Secretary told the Low Carbon Economy conference that he anticipated an increase in jobs in forestry, and at the same time acknowledged the economic contribution forests make.
"The nation's forest estate is a very valuable resource especially across the South of Scotland, but Forestry Commission Scotland has initiated a jobs freeze because of UK Government policy.
"The FCS is completely accountable to the Scottish Government and should not stop hiring because of UK Government policy.
"Either Roseanna Cunningham has lost control of the FCS, or someone has mistakenly followed UK Government policy.
"I have written to Roseanna Cunningham asking for assurances that Forestry Commission Scotland is directly accountable only to her, as the Scottish Forestry Minister.
"I want to know the reasons behind this apparent break with Scottish Government policy."
