Jim Hume, Liberal Democrat MSP for the South of Scotland, will today quiz the Scottish Government on efforts to tackle racially aggravated crime in Dumfries and Galloway.
The MSP will question the Justice Secretary following the release of Government statistics last week which showed that in Dumfries and Galloway alone there has been an increase in racist incidents from 64 to 96 - a rise of 50%, and a similar increase in total racist crimes from 58 to 92.
Jim Hume said:
"Whilst nationally there has been a small reduction in racist incidents, it is very worrying to see such a sharp rise in Dumfries and Galloway.
"The Scottish Government must tackle this problem before it is allowed to get any worse.
"We need to stamp out racism. Too many people are becoming victims of racist crimes or incidents."
