LOCAL NEWSPAPERS AND PUBLIC NOTICES - COMMON SENSE FINALLY PREVAILS OVER ONLINE ADVERTISING

March 17, 2010 5:00 PM

Jim Hume, Liberal Democrat MSP for the South of Scotland, has today welcomed news of the Scottish Government's U-turn on the way public information notices are advertised.

The Government's proposal would have seen public information notices advertised online rather than through local newspapers.

Mr Hume said:

"Liberal Democrats have consistently been pushing for this proposal to be dropped, and the news that it now finally has will be welcomed by local newspapers across the South of Scotland.

"In recent months I've received representations from editors and readers concerned about the impact this proposal would have had on not only newspaper income, but also the social aspect of information availability and of course digital exclusion where many people in particularly rural or remote areas of the region do not have access to the internet.

"Common sense has finally prevailed."
