Jim Hume MSP, Liberal Democrat MSP for the South of Scotland, will today bring Skills Minister Keith Brown MSP to Hawick to talk to textiles employers about the future of the industry.
The MSP, will be joined by local MP, Michael Moore, convened the summit following an earlier meeting with the Minister during which he pledged to meet with local employers to talk about skills within the sector.
Mr Hume said:
"The textiles industry does face certain challenges and like most sectors, the recession has not helped. One of the key factors with any industry is in making sure there is investment in skills so that the Borders remains competitive.
"Skillfast UK will no longer exist beyond March of this year, so there will be no singe body responsible for pulling together the skills requirements and no means of co-ordinating funding for the delivery of any training which leaves the industry at a serious competitive disadvantage. This is especially so because Spain and Italy for example are investing heavily in skills to ensure that their industry is at the forefront of any business coming out of the recession.
"The Minister will hear direct from employers exactly what's needed to safeguard the future of textiles in the Borders and I hope that he will respond with a long term investment strategy."
