Jim Hume, Liberal Democrat MSP for the South of Scotland, has welcomed the news that Galloway Forest Park has been awarded gold tier Dark Sky Park status by the International Dark Sky Association, making it one of the best locations in the world for stargazers.
Mr Hume said:
"I'm delighted that Galloway Forest has won this outstanding international award because it really does rubber stamp the fact that the south west of Scotland is a place of great natural beauty and it's right on our doorstep.
"The forestry network is economically crucial in this part of Scotland and this latest seal of approval will undoubtedly be another recreational reason why people are drawn to the area."

Notes to editors:
Earlier this year, Mr Hume led the successful campaign against the Scottish Government's universally unpopular plan to sell off 25% of Scotland's most commercially productive publicly owned forests to Rothschild Investment Banking Group. All of Galloway Forest Park was to be included in this unsuccessful sell off.
