Jim Hume, Liberal Democrat MSP for the South of Scotland, and Mike Moore, Libdem MP for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk, today celebrated with Peelham farmers, Denise and Chris Walton, as they accepted the award of Future Farmer during a presentation at her Borders' farm.
The aim of Future Farmer Award, now in its second year, is to promote practical ideas for improving the sustainability of farming in Scotland.
Jim Hume said:
"What Denise and husband Chris have achieved is an excellent example of a truly sustainable and economically successful farming business which produces high quality meats from home grown British native animals.
"The award is well deserved and I'm sure their business will go from strength to strength.
The MSP continued:
"What Chris and Denise are doing is proof that locally produced quality food can form the basis of a successful business.
"Looking at the bigger picture, making the most of our local and home grown produce is key in ensuring that agriculture and rural enterprises are successful.
"As individuals we can support businesses by going to farmers' markets, but at a policy level, I believe that this local food theory should be applied to the public sector and I want to see all hospitals, schools and other public sector offices using fresh, seasonal ingredients. It's been done in schools in East Ayrshire with great results for children's health, parent involvement and for local businesses who are effectively guaranteed contracts for the academic year.
"I want to see the Scottish Government follow through on the promise made back in 2007 to incorporate this into public procurement negotiations through the long awaited National Food Policy."
