Leading Liberal Democrat and South of Scotland MSP, Jim Hume, has bitterly condemned the Scottish Rugby Union as shamefully hypocritical for kicking St Boswells RFC out of the Scottish Cup because of fixture congestion and then allowing matches to be played after the fixture deadline.
The SRU said that all matches had to be played by 10th May and took the decision to eject St Boswells from the competition to ease congestion, but the MSP has discovered that a separate match has just been rescheduled for 17th May.
Jim Hume said:
"The SRU took the decision to kick St Boswells out of the Scottish Cup apparently on the grounds of 'fixture congestion', and yet in the same week I've discovered that at least one match has been fixed for 17th May - a whole week after the season's deadline.
"I honestly cannot fathom why SRU officials took the decision to kick St Boswells out in the first place, but it's even more incomprehensible to me why they then took the decision to allow matches to be played well after the 10th May deadline.
"The decision to kick St Boswells out of the competition was bad enough, but to rub salt in the wound by allowing matches to be played well passed the deadline must surely be a kick in the teeth for the club.
"The SRU's treatment of St Boswells has been calamitous and shamefully hypocritical."
