Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland and Liberal Democrat Environment spokesperson, has welcomed the appointment of Peter Cook to undertake a first stage review of the £1.6 billion Scotland Rural Development Programme (SRDP).
Jim Hume said:
"I welcome Peter Cook's appointment. This review is vital for safeguarding rural business and development in the South of Scotland's fragile and remote communities.
"However, Liberal Democrats have serious concerns with the operation of the Rural Priorities Scheme. It has been described as a 'bureaucratic morass' and a 'nightmare' and too many farmers have been put off even applying.
The MSP continued:
"Scotland's already hard pressed farmers cannot wait until the end of April for these issues to be addressed. Ministers must act sooner to address the continuing problems with the Rural Priorities Scheme."
