Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland, today urged the Scottish Executive to provide any available assistance for people facing redundancy following the announcement by Stena that the company will be carrying out a cost cutting exercise resulting in job losses in Stranraer.
The news follows last year's disappointing reductions in civil service staff jobs in Dumfries as a result of the UK Government's review of HMRC offices.
Jim Hume said:
"The news that Stena will undoubtedly have voluntary redundancies and possibly compulsory job losses is very disappointing and extremely worrying for employees and their families. It's therefore imperative that the Scottish Government recognises the difficulties that jobs losses pose for the South West of Scotland.
"Every available bit of help and assistance to get people back to work or into training as well as ensuring their legal rights are upheld during any redundancy process is crucial.
The MSP continued:
"Stimulating the economy to increase job opportunities in areas where the issue of low wages is already a problem and the recession is adding unbearable pressure.
"Unfortunately neither the UK nor Scottish Governments have taken any decisive action to help, in fact quite the opposite. The UK Government is removing civil service jobs whilst the Scottish Government's centralist agenda is forcing public sector jobs away from rural and remote areas.
"We need job creation, development and regeneration, not the removal of staple industries from our vulnerable areas."
