FORESTRY PLAN MET WITH WIDESPREAD OPPOSITION, DROP IT NOW!

January 29, 2009 12:00 AM

Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland and Environment spokesperson, has demanded that the Scottish Government scraps its plans to offer 75 year leases on some of Scotland's most valuable forestry land to private investment companies.

Commenting as the Scottish Parliament debated the proposals, Mr Hume, who has led the campaign against the plans, said:

"The effective sell off of the most commercial public forestry estate across the Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway will not benefit the regions or Scotland as a whole. It will not solve the many issues of climate change. It is naïve at best and reckless at worst.

"An historic alliance comprised of the NFUS and other land based groups, environmentalists, timber companies, trade unions and leisure and tourism businesses is steadfastly opposed to this ludicrous the proposals.

"One of the thousands of people who returned the Liberal Democrat petition against the plans summed it up when they said that 'voting for Alex Salmond and his cronies will be a thing I regret for the rest of my days'.

The MSP continued:

"The effective sell off of Scotland's forests is an unforgivable act. This plan should be scrapped immediately."
