Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland, has today reacted angrily to the news that following a UK wide review by HM Revenue and Customs, the HMRC tax office in Dumfries will close.
The office at Government Buildings in the town will see the majority of the remaining jobs lost.
"As part of it's plans to centralise HMRC operations, the Government has confirmed that it intends to close its Dumfries office which has already seen significant job losses in recent years.
"The majority of remaining staff are likely to face redundancy. The difficulty is that the town's rural location means that other public sector jobs might not be readily accessible. With Dumfries being a rural town, these further job losses will have a serious impact upon the local economy.
"Centralisation of Government departments is having a devastating effect on rural locations like Dumfries with share of public sector jobs is being moved to cities, resulting in civil service job opportunities being lost for more rural areas.
The MSP continued:
"It's imperitive that employess facing redundancy are given the right advice and help through this undoubtedly difficult time."
