Jim Hume, Liberal Democrat MSP for the South of Scotland, has today received assurances that vulnerable people in Chirnside and Foulden will be given extra help to cope with the shut off in water supply from 11pm this evening (20th November) until 7am tomorrow (21st November) which is needed to repair a damaged pipe.
Scottish Water's emergency helpline number is 0845 601 8855 and people are being urged to store as much water in containers as possible in preparation. They are also being advised not to use dishwashers and washing machines during the shut off period.
Jim Hume said:
"Scottish Water clearly has to repair any damage to the mains supply and people will understand that.
"In particular though there may very well be elderly or immobile folk who are just not physically able to deal with heavy containers of water and could as a consequence go without.
"That was the point I made to the company and the assurance is that Scottish Water will add customers' details to its Special Assistance Register, along with a note of the services they need. The company will 'deliver alternative water supplies if they would find it difficult to get to a tank in the street or if their health could be jeopardised by interruptions to their supply'.
"I'm urging any vulnerable residents who need assistance to register by calling the helpline on 0845 606 8855."
