Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland, has demanded that the Scottish Government clarify how it is going to deliver its commitment to recruiting 1000 extra police officers across Scotland in the next three years.
The MSP's comments follow a report from Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary to local councillors highlighting that police recruitment in the area may have to freeze, due in part to a £140,000 rise in fuel expenditure over the last year.
Jim Hume said:
"This report from the Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary is deeply worrying. It shows that across Scotland, everyone from individuals and families to local authorities and police forces are feeling the pinch as fuel costs rise. Clearly other police forces will have similar pressures.
"The Scottish Government pledged to ensure that funds were made available for 1000 additional police officers over the next three years.
"The SNP must make clear to the public how they are going to support police forces and honour this manifesto commitment so that it doesn't become yet another broken promise from this Government."
