Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland, will be at the forefront of a movement designed to bring cooperatives closer to the Scottish Parliament through his work as co-convener of the newly established Cross Party Group on Cooperatives.
Jim Hume said:
"The establishment of a Cross Party Group on Cooperatives is timely given the first year anniversary of Co-operative Development Scotland which was set up to promote and facilitate the development of co-operative enterprises across Scotland.
"The combined annual turnover of co-operatives and mutuals in Scotland is estimated to be around £4 billion, but the contribution from this sector to the South of Scotland economy could be increased with government funding for Co-operative Development Scotland beyond March 2009.
The MSP added:
"Cooperatives are not a new thing, dating back as far as the 18th century. There are immense socio-economic benefits of a collective group of individuals owning and running their own organization, and of course this concept of mutual ownership is particularly relevant now given the difficult economic circumstances we currently face.
"I look forward to the work ahead as one of the co-conveners."
