Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland and Deputy Rural Affairs Spokesman, has today reacted to news that a start date for Scotland's Bluetongue vaccination programme has been set for 3rd November.
From 3rd November, all cattle and sheep in Scotland of three months of age and older will legally require vaccination against strain 8 of the bluetongue virus (BTV8), and vaccination should be completed by 30th April 2009.
Jim Hume said:
"Having to protect Scotland's flocks and herds by way of vaccination is not perfect, but it does seem the only sure way to prevent livestock being exposed to the risk of Bluetongue given the size of the problem in Europe and of course recent cases in England and Wales.
The MSP continued:
"As well as a vaccination programme, the Scottish Government should be making sure that infected animals are not allowed into Scotland either from England or further a field, therefore, I would also urge livestock producers not to import any animals from infected or susceptible areas."
