Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland, has today welcomed a proposal for a project that will mark Gretna as the "Gateway to Scotland" by constructing a piece of artwork set to rival Gatehead's Angel of the North.
Jim Hume said:-
"The South of Scotland boasts many fine historic and tourist attractions, and marking Gretna officially known as the Gateway to Scotland is most welcome.
"I hope that this sees the start many good things to come for the South of Scotland. It's a great place to visit and whatever you're looking for whether East Lothian's impressive castles, rare books in Wigtown - home of Scotland's book festival - or speciality foods such as are found at the Teviot Game Fare Smokery and Water Gardens near Kelso, or mountain biking and outdoor activities at the 7Stanes project and Tweed valley adventure sports at Traquair and Glentress. There really is something for everyone.
"A jewel in the South Region's crown has to be the Solway coast which, with its warm climes, must be Scotland's very own Costa del Solway.
The MSP continued:-
"I hope that the project will have positive knock on effects for the region's tourism sector.
"Gateshead's Angel of the North is visited by about 33 million people every year and if a structure with the same appeal could be built at Gretna, the local economy will undoubtedly benefit from that extra trade."
