Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland, has today received assurances from a senior Tesco representative that the company has no immediate plans to locate a store near Hawick.
Jim Hume said:
"The issue was brought to me by several individual constituents and through my local shop survey.
"Essentially people were concerned from the outset that such a large retail development would have detrimental effects on the local economy and in particular high street traders or small businesses unable to compete with Tesco.
The MSP continued:
"I secured a future meeting with a senior Tesco representative to discuss the matter face to face, but after a telephone discussion with him today it seems that Tesco 'has no plans to locate a store near Hawick'.
"I think that this news will be welcomed by many."
