Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland and Environment spokesperson, has urged the Scottish Government to press the European Commission to amend the proposed European regulation on electronic ear tagging for sheep. Mr Hume is backing the NFU Scotland campaign, which argues that the proposals will be impossible to operate in Scotland.
Jim Hume said:-
"NFU Scotland and the EC officials agree that the proposals, as they stand, are not suitable for Scotland. The nature of the rural farming land in Scotland means that the batch system of ear tagging is far more appropriate.
"The Scottish Government must work cooperatively with the UK Government and press the European Commission to amend this regulation.
"Farmers in Scotland have endured a tough couple of years, and the last thing the sheep industry needs is an expensive and impracticable scheme like this. Scottish Ministers must stand up for their interests in the EC."
