Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland, has called on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to freeze the proposed spring 2008 fuel duty increase of 2p per litre and to redress the imbalance between rural and urban fuel prices.
Jim Hume said:-
"Towards the end of last year I called on the Scottish Government to persuade the Chancellor to put on hold the plans for this spring's 2p fuel duty increase.
"And now following a letter to the Chancellor from the British Chamber of Commerce which asked for the same, it seems as though a freeze on further increases for the foreseeable future would be welcome by people right across the spectrum from individuals living in rural areas through to those who rely on road transport for commercial purposes.
The MSP continued:-
"I have today written to the Chancellor asking that he implements a freeze and will continue to pursue the issue vigorously.
"Public transport infrastructure in many parts of the South of Scotland is poor and non existent in some, so for many people owning a car is a vital tool to allow them to get to and from work.
"The bottom line is that my constituents simply cannot afford any further increases."
