SHEEP TAG RULES - UNWORKABLE

February 27, 2008 12:00 AM

Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland, has again called on the Scottish Government to take account of Scotland's sheep farming interests by making sure Ministers press the European Commission to amend the proposed European regulation on electronic ear tagging for sheep.

Jim Hume said:-

"NFU Scotland and the EC officials agree that the proposals, as they stand, are not suitable for Scotland. The nature of the rural farming land in Scotland means that the batch system of ear tagging is far more appropriate.

"The Scottish Government must work cooperatively with the UK Government and press the European Commission to amend this regulation.

"Farmers in Scotland have endured a tough couple of years, and the last thing the sheep industry needs is an expensive and impracticable scheme like this. Scottish Ministers must stand up for their interests in the EC.

The MSP continued:-

"Working in conjunction with my Borders colleague, Michael Moore MP - who is also backing a Westminster Parliamentary motion which expresses concerns about the proposals, I shall continue to stand up for Scottish farmers."
