Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland - commenting ahead of the Opposition Day debate in Westminster today - has given backing to Libdem Westminster colleagues' calls for an independent inquiry into the war in Iraq to coincide with the recent fifth anniversary of the conflict.
Jim Hume said:-
"It was clear at the time of the invasion that the UK government's decision and strategy were ill-judged. The war was meant to rid Iraq of its weapons of mass destruction and make the world a safer place. However, no weapons were ever found, and the threats from terrorism have worsened.
"Since the invasion began, 175 British troops have lost their lives, £7 billion of our money has been spent on the war and 600,000 Iraqis have lost their lives. And there is still no end in sight, as the government has yet to set out a timetable for full withdrawal of the remaining UK troops from Iraq.
The MSP continued:-
"Serious questions have to be asked about the origins and conduct of the Iraq war and this can only be achieved with a full, independent inquiry. Lessons have to be learned from our experiences in Iraq to ensure that similar mistakes are not made again."
