Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland and Shadow Environment Spokesman, had success in Parliament yesterday (24th January) when MSPs unanimously agreed to his contribution to a debate on Scotland's biodiversity targets which the MSP said could only be met through adequate funding and by seeking the active involvement with those on the ground, rather than civil servants and some conservation organisations.
Scottish Liberal Democrats want to see a halt to any more loss in biodiversity by 2010 to prevent any further degradation of Scotland's natural heritage.
Jim Hume said:-
"The previous Executive led the way on the protection and enhancement of Scotland's landscapes and the Scottish Government cannot simply appoint agencies such as SNH, SEPA and others to make decisions from the top down. Active engagement of the grass roots stakeholders such as land managers, land users and land practitioners both on and off shore is vital in ensuring the loss of biodiversity is halted by 2010.
"It's common sense that those working the land are in a prime position to nurture its flora and fauna, but this can only happen through inclusion at all levels and by making sure people on the ground understand the aims of the strategy and have a say in its delivery.
The MSP continued:-
"My amendment to the biodiversity debate will ensure that we now have a more inclusive Biodiversity Strategy here in Scotland."
