Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland, has today echoed concerns about Brazilian beef imports following the publication of a European Commission report which revealed "systemic failures in relation to holding registration, animal identification and movement controls" and has voiced his support for an outright ban on Brazilian beef imports.
Jim Hume said:-
"The report, which was written following a fact finding mission to Brazil by the European Commission's Food and Veterinary Office, has revealed precisely what those in the industry have suspected for a very long time.
"The officials on the mission uncovered numerous failings at individual farm level including, worryingly, failure to report cases of foot and mouth disease; and major discrepancies between the Brazilian authorities' own database and the reality on the ground.
The MSP continued:-
"The only realistic way forward in protecting Scotland and the rest of the UK from diseases coming into the country from places with less strict animal farming standards is an outright ban, and I sincerely hope that the renewed calls from the industry for a ban on Brazilian beef are acted upon by the EU Commission to safeguard the future of our agriculture sector."
