Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland, has today called on Scottish Borders Council to work out flood defence scheme for Hawick.
Jim Hume said:-
"Plans have been drawn up which are based on a 1 in 200 year flood, but these are too expensive and are also too much of an eyesore on the town. The suggestion of a high flood wall for example has been likened to the Berlin Wall.
"In practical terms, it's better to plan for a 1 in 50 year defence for example which would be far cheaper and less of an eyesore simply because the 1 in 50 year flood would in theory not be as damaging as a 1 in 200 year flood.
"The Council should look in to soft engineering upstream which involves use of ecological principles and practices to reduce flooding rather than hard engineering which involves the use of man made structures.
The MSP continued:-
"Nationally, the SNP hasn't put in any further funding for flooding even though they had an increased settlement from the UK Government. In real terms this is a 2.6% decrease in the flood prevention budget."
