Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland and Environment spokesperson, was yesterday successful in winning support from the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish Government for work to progress Scotland's Biomass Action Plan and successfully gained cross party Parliamentary agreement that forestry can play a huge part in helping to meet Scotland's renewable energy targets through biomass generation.
The MSP's successful amendment called on the government to deliver the previous administration's Biomass Action Plan.
Jim Hume said:-
"Forestry can play an important role in helping to meet Scotland's renewable energy targets through biomass generation.
"The Scottish Government must build on the significant progress on biomass made by the Liberal Democrats in the previous administration. We want to see the government supporting a second round of the highly successful biomass support scheme, pioneered by Liberal Democrat leader, Nicol Stephen.
The MSP continued:-
"And of course forestry is a major player in Scotland's economy. That is especially true in the south west, where the local enterprise company has specialised in forestry innovation. We have the new E.ON plant, which produces electricity from locally grown willow.
"Ministers must make a real effort to develop the biomass industry in Scotland, particularly the Biomass Action Plan. This will not only make a contribution to tackling climate change, but will maximise opportunities for growth and jobs in the renewables industry and communities across the South of Scotland.
"I'm delighted that I managed to win over the SNP and get them to vote positively for my amendment."
