Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland, has reacted to the news that plans to re-consult on the Environmental Levy on Plastic Bags Bill following the Environment and Rural Development Committee's meeting this week in Holyrood.
Jim Hume said:-
"I didn't think that further consultation was necessary, given that the benefits of the Bill are evident from submissions already gathered and the legislation's success in Ireland. A further consultation would simply be a waste of time and money.
"Although I am disappointed at the Committee's decision, I do not consider it a significant obstacle to the progress of the Bill. Public and corporate attitudes to plastic bags are changing as more and more people are realising the
environmental benefits that the Bill has to offer.
The MSP continued:-
"Major organisations such as Marks and Spencer have already signalled their intent to charge for plastic bags.
"I hope other retailers follow suit."
