South of Scotland MSP Jim Hume has today welcomed the news that Glasgow University's Crichton campus in Dumfries will begin admitting undergraduate liberal arts students as of next academic year.
Jim said:-
"This is excellent news and I'm delighted that new undergraduate students will be starting next year.
"I have campaigned on this issue for a while now and raised my concerns with the Scottish Executive in the form of a parliamentary motion some time ago.
"I have over the last few months met with all interested parties and in fact I'm due to meet with students next week, so many of whom have worked very hard to secure the university's presence at the campus, so it'll be a great chance to discuss this most recent developments.
"It seems that the Minister has acknowledged the importance of the campus in the context of the economy of the South of Scotland which is a most welcome piece of news.
The MSP continued:-
"The Crichton campus which encompasses Glasgow and Paisley Universities as well as Bell College and the Crichton Development Company is a high quality centre of education and learning not just for the South West of Scotland, but also for the whole of the South of Scotland.
"Ensuring that Glasgow University begins enrolling undergraduate students again will open up higher education opportunities for many more thousands of people across the region.
"The challenge lies now in ensuring the long term viability of the University's presence in Dumfries and I shall be raising that point with the Minister."
