Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland, today congratulated young Scot, Ruaridh Cunningham of Stow, on wining a gold medal in the downhill mountain biking World Championships.
Jim Hume said:-
"This is an excellent achievement for Ruaridh and he will be an example to other young folk who want to take part in this or indeed any other sport.
"This is the first time a men's gold medal has been won by anyone in the UK and Ruaridh should quite rightly feel very proud, not least because it's a terrifically hard and sometimes dangerous sport.
The MSP continued:-
"I lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament because it's important that Ruaridh's achievement is recognised.
"It's also a good opportunity to highlight the fact that sport in young people's lives can play a huge part in boosting confidence as well as good health.
"Furthermore, I'm encouraged by the help that Ruaridh received from the Scottish Institute of Sport Foundation and sincerely hope that Scotland can nurture its youngsters at all levels.
"Through sport, our young people are opened up to all sorts of social and health benefits."
