Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland, has today asked the Scottish Government to bring forward payments for the Less Favoured Areas Support Scheme and the Beef Calf Support Scheme in a bid to help struggling farmers.
Jim Hume said:-
"Some 13,000 farmers across Scotland benefit from LFASS payments which are normally made in the spring, but with the recent difficulties experienced by the sector early payments would significantly assist those in the industry.
"The Scottish Government - in supporting a viable and sustainable agriculture industry - should bring forward LFASS and Beef Calf Support Scheme payments to relieve the unprecedented pressure on the sector created by the damaging effects of the foot and mouth disease outbreak and the recent dramatic hike in feed prices.
The MSP continued:-
"By taking this measure, the Scottish Government will not only be assisting greatly our agriculture industry, but will also be making a serious commitment to its future sustainability."
